Clara vive da vent'anni in un villaggio bigotto che le sta troppo stretto. La speranza di un cambiamento viene improvvisamente riaccesa quando, nel suo piccolo paese, arriva un misterioso straniero. Clara rimane stregata dal fascino antico, rigido e inflessibile di quest'uomo, ma rimane inizialmente scettica, non cedendo alle parole seduttrici e studiandolo meticolosamente affidandosi alla ragione. Quello che scoprirà sul conto dell'uomo sconvolgerà completamente le sue credenze, minando le salde fondamenta sulle quali esse sono fondate.
